Template Concept Board

I chose my template concept board for my skirt designs.  I personally think it could have been a lot more creative and gone outside the box more.  I do like the bold colors and clarity of the pictures. It is not too cluttered and represents the architect well.

Synopsis: Frank O. Gehry

Frank O. Gehry was originally from Toronto, Canada. He is now located in Santa Monica, California. He uses industrial materials for aesthetics. The idea that you can make a work of art out of anything interests him. He likes to use metal because it is inexpensive and when he first started designing he liked to be more hands on with the material, this was the most accessible to him. He also liked how the metal reflected light from the sky. He also likes to sculpt his architecture by hand, he does not prefer drawing he would rather make a model first. If you see his blue prints for buildings they are unstructured and scattered on the page.
He also likes to approach architecture as if it was science by having break throughs or exploring parts of designing that others have not. He thinks there are already a lot of people designing clean work; they lack the spontaneity that’s worth exploring and that’s what he tries to do as an architect.
The shapes that are involved in his design of the hotel, Marqués de Riscal are ovals, rectangles and squares. Most of the windows have extremely long rectangular shape to them and stretch through out the structure. The curved rectangular shapes make the hotel look as if it’s out of a movie or a cartoon. There are many flowy lose lines on the hotel which makes it hard to tell the direction of the building itself. The other lines he uses are curved lines that move into and over each other. There are also many diagonal lines through out the building. You can see these lines everywhere, whether you are walking underneath the beams that hold up the ribbon structure or the entrance to the hotel.


The hotel has a free flowing feel to it with the ribbon like top piece but it also has many aspects that are sharp and structured. The texture of the top metal part of the building looks very smooth while the bottom form that the metal sits on looks semi rough and adobe like. The three dimensional qualities of this building is the ribbon structure on the top and the square boxy structure underneath. The coloring of the building is light grey, light pink, and cool blue on the metal portion of the building. The interesting aspect of the hotel is that the color of the metal changes depending on what direction the light is shining on it. If the light is bright that day it will make the pink look orange. The bottom portion of the building is a sandy brown and dark wood brown. The building looks almost as if someone has coiled up a bunch of ribbon and taped it to the top of it. It is also an extremely modern building, it was built in 2006. You can observe this from the type of lines that are used and the texture of the design.
All of these characteristics that make up this hotel can be used to design fashion by incorporating the colors and looseness of the ribbon like design. When designing fashion all of the clothing would be very structured but lose fitting and incorporate many sharp tones such as a cool blue and light grey mixed together. The clothing would also incorporate a lot of smooth textures such as silk and polyester.

Frank O. Gehry

This is my new architect, he makes curved and overlapping designs, they look like ribbon attached to a building. This is what firt caught my eye and drew me to research more into the architecture of the hotel Marques de Rascal in Elciego, Spain. He once quoted, "Architecture should speak of a time and place, but yearn for timelessness".

Text on Movie Posters

I think this is a good example of text used correctly. The style of the text looks like blood and that is exactly what the movie is trying to portray. It gets the message of the movie across clearly to the viewer. It is also cenetered int he middle and directs the viewers eye at the title and the point of the movie.

I think this is an example of bad text. There is too many different types of text. It does not keep the add flowing. There is white, black, green and orange colored text. It makes the poster confusing and lose its rhythm. I also do no like the horizontal stripes behind it. It makes the poster too scattered.

Scanning

1. When you first scan you place the object you wish to scan on the scanner and close the lid. Then you open up photoshop and go to File (on the toolbar) and click Import then click Scanner. Then the Scanner will open up and you go to New Scan and properties will drop down from an arrow and you can adjust the amount of colors you want in the photo and the number of dpi you want. Then you hit New Scan and the photo will scan in. Then if you like the photo that scanned in, you will hit Accept. First you save the image as a .psd (photoshop image) and then you save it as a .jpeg image.

2. The descreen button takes away the wavy look that appears on your image when you scan it in. The wavy affect usually happens because the other side of the object is showing through. For example, the other side of the magazine page you are scanning. the descreen process consists of two different operations, screen removing and reducing a halftone miore pattern.

3. Dpi means dots per inch, which is pixels per inch in the photo, therefore if an image has lower resolution it will make it look grainy and a higher resolution will make the it look clear/sharp. Starting from left to right the first image is at a 360 dpi, 200 dpi and 72 dpi. You can notice the sharpness of the photo increase as the dpi increases.




4. These are my DDS's they were scanned in at 200dpi using a million colors or RGM. I think I should have scanned them in at different Dpi because the backround is blue from the white paper. I am not sure but I dont like how they turned out.

My first fashion communication's class

My first impression of my fashion communications class was that it was very exciting! I have never used photoshop before but have always wanted to. I have also never made a concept board, I am looking forward to that as well. I think they look so amazing when they all blend together to create one overall look, like the example Lea showed us in class. I was a little overwhelmed at first because I am studying fashion merchandising at my home university and don't have any interest in designing. After the class was over I was very eager to begin my blog and look at other fashion blogs I was interested in. I think this will be a very beneficial class to me overall.
